GMI meeting coming Saturday 19 April, at Penang

Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) will organize a meeting with all the coalition members, the meeting agenda would be more focus towards setup a coalition in Penang to strengthen the campaigns so that GMI can perform to pressure the government, newly appointed MPs and ADUNs from the Barisan Rakyat to speak up on ISA in Parliament and State Assemblies.

The details are as follows:

Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) or Abolish ISA Movement which consists of more than 83 organisations made up of non-governmental bodies, political parties, trade union, human rights bodies, women and student bodies.

AIM was established in April 2001, after the arrest of 10 leaders from the Reform Movement (dubbed Reformasi-10). NGOs, community organisations and opposition politicians have openly condemned the arrests. A movement was then slowly gathering under the umbrella body of a new citizen’s initiative — AIM. The AIM is led by human rights and pro-democracy organisations, women’s groups, students, and political activists. To date, there are 83 member organisations in AIM.

ISA Internal Security Act (ISA) being introduced since 1960 as a preventive detention law in force in Malaysia. Under this act anyone can be detained for 60 days without trial and after 60 days, one may be further detained for a period of 2 years.

Some detainees have been detained for 6 years; those who passionate want to abolish ISA or support the movement are welcome to the programme.

With much pleasure, we wish to inform you that Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) will organize a meeting with all the coalition members, NGO's and friends in Penang. The meeting also aims to provide a platform for civil society organizations to discuss and brainstorm on strategies and plan of actions to work together in abolishing ISA and safeguard rights and security of the people.
